Guilds are defined as associations of people with similar interests, or groups of species that exploit the same resources in the same way, therefore sharing a similar ecological niche. Either way, the organic growers in Lanark County share similar aims and methods, so we get together regularly to share experiences with each other and with invited teachers.
Some of the things we've done so far: winter study group, crop planning workshop, display at Algonquin College's Sustainability Fair. Coming up: farm tours, joint purchasing, more speakers and studies.
The group is aimed at commercial-scale market gardeners and farmers, but those with a backyard garden are welcome as well. Contact Kristine Swaren, 613-278-1226 or [email protected]. Funding for the group is provided by the Organic Council of Ontario (www.organiccouncil.ca).
