Pearl Ward has been tending the thirteen acres of woods, brush, lakes and hills that comprise her Heritage Homestead for over 25 years. Born and raised on a farm, Pearl uses her mother's old recipes to make acorn bread, butternut fudge, hawthorn jelly and sumac lemonade with the nuts and berries from the trees on her property.  With the occasional help of her grandchildren, Pearl also grows an array of seasonal non-certified organic vegetables and herbs, and a variety of berries: blackberries, large and small blueberries, red and black currants.
Pearl's real passion, however is poultry: bantams, ducks, geese, guinea, quail, turkeys, and a variety of hens.  She has between 70 and 80 birds, predominantly rare and heritage breeds that she raises for eggs - though she will sell young birds if available.  Her small Beltsville White turkeys are amongst the last 700 of that type remaining in Canada along with Ancona, Appleyard and Aylesbury ducks.  Her Buff, Pilgrim and Pomeranian geese are on the critical list, as are the Blue Andalusian, Chantecler (Canada's one and only breed of chicken), Hungarian Yellowsand Anconas chickens. Pearl also does Rare Breeds Canada displays of her poultry at various farmers markets and fairs.
